Movie Style Robotic Legs Are A Reality

We've all seen the movie Aliens, where Sigourney Weaver takes on the queen alien at the end of the film. To give herself a power boost, she straps herself into a giant industrial exoskeleton, complete with powerful pincers and even more powerful robotic legs. And then she dukes it out with the uber extra terrestrial.

With the miracle of special effects, it looked almost believable. You may be surprised to know that there is something out there in real life, right now, that works very much like this. It's called the BLEEX and it's literally a pair of robotic legs that anyone can wear.

The idea is that it increases the wearer's strength, allowing them to carry vast weights and perform at a higher level. The wearer simply straps themselves into them, exactly like in the alien movie. Once the robotic legs are secured, there's no joystick or controls to mess around with. You just walk.

How is this movement possible? These are no ordinary gadgets. Built into the Bleex are over 40 complex sensors which track the movements of the user's legs. They then move in that direction allowing for a natural walk movement. The only difference is that the owner will have much increased leg strength.

Designed originally for military purposes, the technology could also be used to help those who have lost the use of their legs. The robotic legs could be combined with another new technology where a wearer's thoughts are interpreted into signals which control the legs. Something similar is in tests at the moment.
